Youth Dialogue on Preventing Sexual Harassment on University Campus

UN Women Executive Director joins the call for an end of cyber harassment on-campus and off-campus in Pakistan at ‘16 Days’ event at SZABIST University Karachi, Pakistan. Cyber harassment on-campus and off-campus is as damaging to women as physical violence and abuse experienced, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said to students and faculty members of SZABIST, the country’s leading technological university as she called for their commitment to speak out for sexual harassment at campuses to end.

This is a new driver of potential harmful gender inequality as more and more Universities and students gain internet access. Sexual harassment is intolerable, and we are witnessing that students are providing inspirational leadership in combatting it. Now is the time for stronger action and we have to start from education, said the Executive Director.

To be disconnected from technology in the 21st century, is like having your freedom disrupted: your right to learn, your right to work, your right to meet people, your freedom of speech. We need to constantly make the point about the advantages of education and technology for women.

Ms. Nasreen Haque, Vice President of SZABIST, Karachi Campus, said, We need to join hands and exercise the power of solidarity to promote and coordinate efforts to advance the full realization of women’s rights, to tell them how valuable and precious they are; that they are to be treated with dignity and respect; that they should disregard anyone who demeans or devalues them. On behalf of SZABIST, I propose a Consortium of Chairs of anti-sexual harassment committees of universities of Karachi to share their experiences.

This year, the UN’s theme for International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is “Orange the World: #HearMeToo”. As the #MeToo and #TimesUp movement picks up in Pakistan, more cases are being reported, making offenders accountable, it is also exposing the prevalence of violence from celebrities to work places including government offices, and to educational institutions. #HearMeToo aims to support all those whose voices are still not yet being heard.

Pakistan’s anti-sexual harassment laws recognizes that sexual harassment is a form of discrimination against women and a human rights violation, that occurs in many arenas of life, including schools and universities.

In any University, sexual assault and sexual harassment is unacceptable. The safety and wellbeing of students and staff who disclose or report sexual assault or sexual harassment needs to be the priority of Universities and at the centre of the University response.

Strategic Marketing in the Digital era: EVOLVE 2018- “ACCEPT, ADAPT and APPLY”

Strategic Marketing in the Digital era: EVOLVE 2018- "ACCEPT, ADAPT and APPLY"

SZABIST, Karachi, 28th, April 2018: The MBA Strategic Marketing students under the guidance of Miss Erum Zaidi organized an international seminar on "Strategic Marketing in the Digital era" under the umbrella of EVOLVE 2018-Accept-Adapt-Apply. This flagship event marked the initiation of Evolve, which aims to open a window towards the digital world which is impending to take the future by a complete storm. Evolve aims to abridge the distance between the conventional and the digital world.
Dr. Kaiser Bengali Dean management sciences at SZABIST took the stage to inaugurate the event by announcing the continuation of “Evolve” every year. The seminar was graced by the market’s eminent personalities, namely Amir Adnan-Designer and Entrepreneur, Zahid Jivanji-COO Cambridge, Daniyal Naqvi-Head of Sales-Daraz.pk, Raheel Yousuf-Head of Digital Marketing HBL, Shahzad Anwar-Head of Brands TCS E-Com and Bilal Habib-AC Neilson UK. These esteemed figures enlightened the students of SZABIST with their diverse experience and divergent perspectives on the digital marketing.
The seminar began with some interesting insights on how the marketing has evolved over the years. All the panellists agreed that there has been a drastic shift from conventional to digital marketing. However, the roots of the traditional marketing are still intact, at-least within the third world countries. Mr. Amir Adnan had been the advocate of the fact that the birth of digital marketing does not proclaim the demise of the traditional marketing, he said, “In the long run, the forms of advertising will change and Digital marketing is the next big thing, but conventional marketing cannot be exempted, as history is the shaper of the future, it cannot be eliminated.” Contrary to that, Mr. Daniyal Naqvi mentioned that the world and Pakistan is not far away from completely going digital. He said, “The concept of Etailing is reforming the conventional marketing efforts.” He further added “One of the biggest advantages of digitalization is Performance Marketing.” Mr. Shahzad said, “It is not a cultural shift, but a trending one, it is a world of survival of the fittest.” The statement was agreed upon by Mr. Raheel Yousuf, who talked about the marketing of HBL-iD, a youth targeted project, being the pioneer of marketing via snapchat in Pakistan, to reach out to the youth, as it is the need of the digital time. In continuation of the conversation, Mr. Zahid Jivanji added to the perspective by accepting digitalization as the means of approaching the maiden areas, and the concept of bricks and motors dying slowly, but he said it is not completely evitable. Mr. Bilal Habib, upon asking about the scope of digital market in the world, he conceded to the fact that the west is more prone to digitalization at this hour, but due to the generational change, the digital wave is bound to hit the entire globe. He further mentioned that the benefit digital marketing comes with is that the marketing efforts are easily trackable. The crux of the conference was that the traditional and digital marketing continue to coexist in Pakistan, but for the time being, as the future is entitled to digital. The key for success of a business can not only be the mode of it, rather it is to optimize costs and bring about results impacting the organization strategic goals by using whichever of the mentioned marketing strategy the need serves.
A consensus of panel experts was achieved on the conclusive note that the conventional marketing is on the rise of dying out, but not completely. Moreover, strategically, digital marketing is being backed by the conventional marketing. Like Mr. Shahzad said, “Digital might become conventional tomorrow.” The event was ended by Mr. Amir Adnan’s success story where he disembarked the stage after instilling the urge within the students regarding following their dreams, whether they are big or small.
The event was made possible by the sponsors who included Day fresh, Hamdard RoohAfza, SAMAA FM 107.4, Dunia News, Audionic and Parhlo. The generous sponsors supported the event by facilitating eateries and giving media and content coverage to the event, to make Evolve a triumph for SZABIST. The event was a phenomenal start to the journey of Evolve and was proved to be a huge success among the students as well as the panellists.
