MS (Media Sciences)
In today’s emerging creative economy, the media play a crucial role in a proliferating number of social and cultural arenas: in politics, public policy, public relations, international relations, sustainable development, and the arts. There is a growing demand for decision makers with a broad, interdisciplinary knowledge of fields as diverse as communication, management, anthropology, sociology, public policy and media studies. The Department of Media Sciences at SZABIST offers a two-year, evening MS program in Media Studies designed to prepare students for managerial and policy-making roles in media, government, private, non-profit, and multinational organizations.
Students with 4-year Bachelor’s degrees in a relevant field of study (or a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field -and a Master’s degree in a relevant field) should be able to complete all course work for the MS degree in two years. To be awarded an MS in Media Studies, students need to complete 48 credit hours of course work (ten core courses, four electives, and a thesis). Students who successfully complete their MS degree may apply for the PhD in Social Sciences. Students accepted into the PhD program need to complete a doctoral dissertation within three years of enrollment, and to fulfill all requirements, including necessary coursework, outlined by the Department of Social Sciences.
Students with a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field of study will need to complete 72 credit hours of coursework partially through our BS program (8 additional courses in consultation with the MS Program Manager) in order to fulfill necessary pre-requisites before starting the Master’s program. (Courses that may be used to fulfill these pre-requisites may include, but are not limited to, Play Analysis; Culture, Media, & Society; Basic Design; History & Aesthetics of Cinema; The Art of Music; Survey of Media in Pakistan; Principles of Journalism; History of Commercial Arts; Business Studies for Media; Civilization Studies I & II; Visual Communications; Production Practices I; Audiovisual Editing; Documentary Vision; State & Nation Building in Pakistan; Media Psychology; Integrated Marketing; Publication Project; New Media Journalism).
Students with 2/3-year undergraduate degrees in unrelated fields should enroll in and complete a BS in Media Sciences or a Master’s in Media Sciences before applying to the graduate program.
